COPLAND. — On June 5, 1935, John George, loved eldest son of John and the late Elizabeth Helen Copland, of Balclutha, and late of Stony Creek; aged 23 years. "Sadly missed."   -Otago Daily Times, 6/6/1935.

Obituary. News was received yesterday of the death at Waipiata Sanatorium of Mr John Copland, oldest son of Mr John Copland of Balclutha, and formerly of Stony Creek. The deceased was in his twenty- fourth year, and was a young man of great promise. He was educated at Stony Creek School and followed farming pursuits until a few years ago, when he became a slaughterman at the Finegand Freezing Works. At the age of 16 he joined the Balclutha Pipe Band, and he had achieved great success as a piper at outside competitions. He won the B Cup at Invercargill last year, the junior cup at Berwick for pipers under 21, and three years ago he won the junior cup in Dunedin. In addition to cups, he had won a number of medals in Highland competitions. He took ill 12 months ago with an attack of measles, which was followed by pleurisy, and he was an inmate of Balclutha Hospital for some time before going to Waipiata some months ago. The deceased was a member of the Loyal Dalton Lodge of Oddfellows, and will be accorded a lodge funeral to-morrow at Balclutha.  -Otago Daily Times, 6/6/1935.
