Robert William Esson, (1879-19/3/1907). "somewhat of an artist"

Very general regret will be felt in the Stirling and Inch Clutha district at the death, after a short but severe illness, of Robert Esson, third son of Mr and Mrs Esson, old and wellknown residents of Tnch Clutha. The deceased returned from a trip to the Christchurch Exhibition at the end of the week before last not looking well. There was no room in the boarding house where he was staying, the bed-rooms being all taken up, so he slept in a tent, and it was supposed he caught a slight cold. He was working with his brother James in the store at Stirling, and after closing up he went out into the open air from the heated shop and talked to a man for some time. The following day (Sunday) he took ill. Congestion of the lungs set in — first the one and then the other — but he had almost got on the fair road to recovery when an aggravated form of the prevailing trouble, British cholera, set in. It developed into inflammation, and made sad inroads on his already weakened frame. It was a severe attack, and the young man succumbed to heart failure as a result of it at 8.30 yesterday morning, after an illness of only a week. He was twenty eight years of age and was very well known in the district. He had been in the store with his brother for about eight years. He was somewhat of an artist, and some of his paintings showed very fair merit. Some of his work was on view at the recent flower show. His untimely end will be regretted by many, and his friends have the sympathy of a wide circle in their sudden loss. The funeral takes place on Thursday.  -Clutha Leader, 19/3/1907.
