SECOND-LIEUTENANT D. G. M. REID
Second-lieutenant Donald Geoffrey McMillan Reid, who has been killed in action, was a son of the late Mr D. Reid, solicitor, of Dunedin, and a grandson of Mr Donald Reid, founder of the firm of Messrs Donald Reid and CoLtd. Second-lieutenant Reid, who was a director of the firm, had for some years been prominently associated with its wool-broking department. He was educated at St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, and spent some years in Bradford, England, learning the wool trade. Through his association with the firm of Donald Reid and Co., he became widely known in both the Otago and Southland districts. It was largely on his initiative that the firm's modern wool store was erected at Logan Point.
From the time of his enlistment he showed exceptional promise as a soldier. His promotion to commissioned rank was rapid, and he was regarded as an outstanding leader.
He was popular and well known in the city, as well as among the rural communities, and was actively associated with several branches of sport. He was a member of the Otago Golf Club, the Otago Lawn Tennis Club, and the Otago Squash Rackets Club, and was also a keen deerstalker. He is survived by his wife and three young children. -Otago Daily Times, 9/4/1943.
