Frances Begg, 1920-10/11/1926.

LITTLE GIRL KILLED

STRUCK BY A TRAM.

[Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Last Night. Frances Begg, a little girl attending the Columba College, and a daughter of Mr. James Begg, a prominent citizen, was killed this morning in an accident on the Kaikorai tramline near Highgate. She was seven years of age. The girl left her home in Ross Street to go to school, and had reached the crossing at Highgate when a city-bound cable tram moved from the waiting shed to the crest of the hill. Somehow she got in front of it, and was knocked down beneath. Willing hands dragged her from below the tram, but death must have been instantaneous, and nothing could be done. The tram was driven by Gripman McKenzie and was in charge of Conductor W. Smith.

Eye-witnesses state that the tram was pulled up very quickly. It seems that the girl’s elder sister, who was with her, passed safely in front of the tram. The smaller girl tried to follow, but had not time enough to get across.

An inquest was opened at the home this afternoon, and proceedings were adjourned after evidence of identification had been given. James Begg, the girl’s father, is a well-known retired sheep-farmer. He is a member of the Board of Agriculture, Royal Agricultural Society, ex-President of the Otago Farmers’ Union, member of the Efficiency Board during the war, of the Taxation Commission, former President of the Otago Branch of the Navy League, and President last year of the New Zealand Navy League.  -Otago Daily Times, 13/7/1935.
