John McMillan, 1878-18/1/1922.

LOCAL AND GENERAL

Two fishermen were out in their launch off Otago Heads on Wednesday, when one of them, a John McMillan, a married man with wife and three children, who was steering, fell overboard. His mate was attending to the engine when he heard McMillan call out, and saw only his boots as he disappeared over the side. He reversed the engine and got to his mate, but with the heavy sea had great difficulty in holding him. He worked the unfortunate man, who was dressed in oilskin and gumboots, round to the weather side of the boat, but with all his efforts he could not get him aboard, and the rough seas swept him from his grasp, and he sank.  -Western Star, 20/1/1922.

DUNEDIN, last night. The Coroner found a verdict of accidental drowning in the case of John McMillan, married, aged 44, lost from a fishing launch on January 18, and never recovered. The widow was in too nervous a condition to attend. She made a sensational statement that she mistrusted deceased's companion, but the evidence showed that the men were on good terms and the Coroner deprecated the statement, scouting the suggestion.  -Poverty Bay Herald, 27/4/1922.
