BALFOUR

In my last notes I mentioned that the measles had appeared in the district, and that we should most likely suffer with the rest of our neighboring districts: this to a certain extent has proved true, the malady having claimed as a victim a promising young man, Ernest Edward Barnett, notice of whose death appeared in your paper, and it is with regret that I have to chronicle this sad event. Ernest was a favorite with all who knew him — kind and gentle in manner; a gentleman ever willing to help and aid where it lay in his power to do so; of strict temperance principles, no doubt not knowing the taste of ardent spirits He was a foremost spirit in the Gospel Temperance Society, rendering pieces at each meeting of that Society. The members will miss his aid, and his place will be very hard to fill. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F., having recently joined. Deceased was interred in the Lumsden cemetery on the 16th., the brotherhood attending at the grave. Although the day was very rough a large number of friends followed the remains to the grave. The settlers greatly feel for Mr and Mrs Barnett and family in the great loss they have sustained. August 19tb, 1893.  -Mataura Ensign, 25/8/1893.
