SUICIDE AT INVERCARGILL.
INVERCARGILL, March 2. Further particulars in regard to William Matheson, whose body was found in the Invercargill estuary, are as follows — The deceased had lodged in the Criterion Hotel, and was observed about the place at 8 o'clock on Sunday evening, but since that time no one appears to have seen him. On Saturday afternoon, while in conversation with a friend, he stated that he was going away and would not be in Invercargill on Monday — that he expected to be on the ocean by then. He was agitated, and appeared worried over something. He went for a drive on Saturday evening, and in conversation with a companion also indicated that it was his intention to leave Invercargill the following day. When the discovery of the body was reported Constable Callanan was despatched to the scene, and found deceased's coat on the bridge, and the body about five yards away, in muddy water, in the first branch of the north channel. Deceased worked the whole of Saturday, and whatever worry he expericnced had, it is supposed, no connection with his occupation. His mother resides at Riversdale, where deceased worked for some time recently. At the inquest a verdict was returned of suicide while of unsound mind. The witness said that deceased had said he was going away by the Melbourne boat, also that he was in trouble in connection with a member of the opposite sex. -Mataura Ensign, 3/3/1908.
