10/2037 Private James Grant (8/4/1877-8/8/1915) and 11/1092 Lance corporal David Johnstone (26/8/1883-24/9/1916) Wilson. "natives of Humphreys Gully"

Word has been received by Mrs Forster, of Kumara, that her brother, Private James Grant Wilson, of Arahura, has been missing since August 8th, 1915. That is the date of the Suvla Bay fight, and the great casualty list. We trust that more reassuring news will be received. Mrs Forster has another brother at the front.  -Greymouth Evening Star, 9/3/1916.

James Wilson served with the Wellington Infantry Regiment and was recorded as missing after the intense offensive operations on or about August 8, 1915.  His death would have been recorded as the verdict of a Court of Enquiry after the evacuation to Egypt.

Advice has been received by Mrs Wilson, of Humphrey's Gully, that Private David J. Wilson, had been killed in action in France. This is the second son lost in the war, the first being James Grant Wilson, who was killed on Gallipoli. They were natives of Humphrey's Gully, where their mother and family reside. To Mrs Wilson who has thus given two of her sons for the Empire, and to all the members of the family will be extended the sympathy of all.  -Grey River Argus, 14/10/1916.

David Wilson also served in the wellington Regiment and died at the height of the Battle of the Somme, a large and confused attack on German positions which was intended to break the stalemate of trench warfare. It did not.
