This afternoon another soldier was laid to rest — Trooper John Hamilton, a single man, 22 years of age, son of the late Mr Samuel Hamilton, of Riccarton, on the Taieri. The deceased went away with the 10th Reinforcements, and after five months’ active service in Egypt was stricken with a lung complaint and invalided to New Zealand. He was born at Riccarton, and educated at Riccarton and Caversham. The funeral was from the Kensington Drill Hall, where a short service was conducted by Chaplain-major Fairmaid, who went with the party to Green Island and continued the service at the graveside there. Major Fleming and a number of returned soldiers went out by train to attend the funeral. -Evening Star, 16/7/1917.
John Hamilton was initially hospitalised in July, 1916, with enteritis. He was subsequently diagnosed with tuberculosis which led to his return to New Zealand and eventual death.
