Noel Reid was called up, as a "married man without children," in February, 1940. In October 1942 he was listed as a prisoner of war and was one of 3000 PoWs on the Italian Ship "Nino Bixio" which was torpedoed by a British submarine in the Mediterranean.
The ship was not flying flags to indicate who it was carrying and so was regarded as a legitimate target by the HMS Turbulent's commander. Two torpedoes hit the "Nino Bixio," one in the forward hold which was "tightly packed." 200 men died and 60 were injured in the explosion.
118 New Zealanders died in the attack, one of which was Noel Henderson.
