William Maffey, (1818-30/6/1880). "every care and comfort"

A sudden death occurred at Kruse's boarding house in Waimea-street this morning, the individual who so unexpectedly passed away being an old settler of the name of William Maffey, who has for the last fifteen years been living a solitary life in the Collingwood district where he had acquired a small property and made his living by growing vegetables, and keeping a small dairy. Feeling that old age was creeping upon him he came over to Nelson a few weeks ago, and, having succeeded in disposing of his property, made up his mind to settle down here. For the last day or two he had been ailing, but none for a moment suspected that his end was so near. His circle of acquaintances was not large, but all who knew him had a good word to say for William Maffey, the news of whose death will be received with no little regret in and around Collingwood.   -Nelson Evening Mail, 30/6/1880.

Death of an Old Settler. — Mr William Maffey, who was well known in the Collingwood district, died on June 30th, at Mr Kruse's boarding-house, Waimea street. After living the life of a digger in Otago and other parts of the Colony, deceased settled down on a small property near Fern Town, where he has been for about fifteen years. Having been ailing for some long time past, and feeling old age creeping rapidly upon him, he came to Nelson, as he told several of his friends, that he might die comfortably and not all alone. Although the end came quicker than his friends anticipated, and every care and comfort was accorded him, the good old Christian was thoroughly prepared in every respect.   -Colonist, 17/7/1880.
