Mr H. R. Duncan has received word that Private Sydney Dodson, previously reported missing, is now reported killed in action. Mrs Dodson's other two sons, Reginald Dodson and Harold P. Dodson, are at present in camp, having voluntarily enlisted some time ago. -Nelson Evening Mail, 13/7/1917.
Sydney Dodson was notified as "missing, believed killed," after the confused Battle of Messines. A subsequent Court of Enquiry changed that to "Killed in action, in the field, in France or Belgium." He has no known grave.
Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson. Note the spelling of Sydney's first name. Such mistakes are rare but not unknown.
