George Heads was born in Middlemarch and went to Otago Boys' High School. He was passionate about flying and gained his civilian pilot's license at Wellington in 1937.
He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1940 and qualified as a flying instructor. He served as instructor until 1944 when he went for operational training. He joined No 33 Squadron, flying DC3 Dakotas, in New Guinea. On June 6 he took off from Milne Bay for Port Moresby. Eleven minutes after take off a explosion was heard from the ground. The Dakota had collided with a mountain in cloud. All on board were killed. George Heads was buried in the Bomana Cemetery, Port Moresby.
