Flora McKenzie, (1909-5/9/1928). "in her usual cheery spirits"

 A TRAGIC OCCURRENCE.

DEATH OF MISS FLORA McKENZIE.

Timaru, September 5. The tragic death occurred at seven this morning of Miss Flora (“Flossie”) McKenzie, who was here as a member of the Southland hockey team participating in the hockey tournament.

As already reported, on Saturday night at a hockey dance she suddenly collapsed shortly after arriving at the dance hall and while in the middle of a dance. Medical aid was summoned and she was conveyed to hospital. Although she did not regain consciousness, reports from the hospital stated that the case was serious but not dangerous. Yesterday she was reported as being slightly better but late last night took a turn for the worse and passed away this morning. The cause of the illness is most mysterious. She did not play hockey on Saturday and in the last game on Thursday was not known to have received any injuries. She was in the best of health and spirits up to the time of her sudden seizure. The illness has been set down as spinal meningitis.

Her unexpected death was a terrible shock to her fellow players by whom she was much loved.   -Southland Times, 6/9/1928.

YOUNG GIRL’S DEATH.

VISITING HOCKEY PLAYER.

General regret was expressed in Timaru yesterday, morning, when it became known that Miss Flora McKenzie, a member off the Southland ladies’ hockey team at present in Timaru, had died at Timaru Public Hospital.

Miss McKenzie, who was 19 years of age, was a daughter of Mr K. McKenzie, Fortrose, near Winton, Southland. The only tournament game in which she played was that against Eastern B, on Thursday last, and after the match was in her usual cheery spirits.

During the course of the dance tendered the visiting hockey players, in Caroline Bay Hall, on Saturday evening, Miss McKenzie suddenly collapsed. After receiving medical attention, she was taken to the hospital, and the case was, at first, not regarded as being serious, in spite of the fact that Miss McKenzie had not regained consciousness. On Tuesday afternoon, Miss McKenzie regained consciousness for a few moments, and was able to recognise her sister, who, with her mother, had been summoned from Southland. At about 11 o’clock on Tuesday night, however, Miss McKenzie took a bad turn, and although everything possible was done, she passed away at seven o’clock yesterday morning. It is stated that death was due to epilepsy.

As a mark of respect, the game, Southland v. Bush, to be played yesterday morning, was postponed, and will now be played on Friday. Officials and players wore black arm bands, and the flag on the grandstand was flown half-mast.  -Timaru Herald, 6/9/1928.

A Press telegram from Invercargill states that the funeral of Miss Flora McKenzie, the Southland representative hockey player, who died at Timaru on Wednesday after a short illness, took place at Fortrose yesterday. The ceremony was impressive, the cortege being two miles long. Scores of wreaths were received from the Hockey Association and other sporting institutions. The Rev. E. G. Evans officiated.  -Timaru Herald, 8/9/1928.

A tribute of respect was paid to the memory of the late Miss Flora McKenzie by the members of the Southland Football Association at the dinner given to the Otago representative team on Saturday evening, those present standing in silence for a short space.  -Southland Times, 24/9/1928.
