A sad accident occurred at Colac Bay on Wednesday, about 10 a.m., whereby a child name George Brown, aged three years, son of William Brown, settler, lost its life. The little fellow and his sister, who is a year older, were playing about a well at the rear of the premises. The well had a cover, which either had been removed by the children, or left open; at anyrate the boy fell in. No one saw the accident except the girl, who ran and told her mother. The well is some 15ft deep and contained eight or nine feet of water. The poor woman was unable to save the child, and by the time she obtained assistance from a neighbor some distance away, the boy had been in the water about 25 minutes, and when recovered was of course quite dead. An inquest was not deemed necessary. -Western Star, 24/7/1886.
