Accident. — A dreadful accident happened to Messrs William Gregory and Andrew Christy, both farmers of this district, while coming home front the Wyndham show. They were driving home in two spring carts, and it appears they got safely to Pine Bush, when after having tea they started on the road again, and just before they reached the Waimatuka Flat Christy told Gregory to come into his cart, and then they could finish their conversation about some sheep that Gregory had made arrangements to shear for Christy. Gregory tied his horse and cart behind Christy's, and got in. After going come distance the breeching strap of Christy's harness broke, and caused his horse to start kicking. At the same time Gregory's horse and cart got foul of Christy's, and Christy's horse backed over into a ditch, throwing both occupants out of the cart. Christy luckily got off with a shaking and some bruises, but Gregory was thrown with his head under water and the cart on top of him. On being extricated it was found that he was dead, his neck and leg being broken. He leaves a large family of 13 children to mourn their loss. -Otago Witness, 14/12/1888.
