1225 Flight Lieutenant Melvin Roland Greenslade, 15/5/1910-28/5/1944. "airman by inclination"

Personal

Otago air casualties officially announced to-day are Flight-lieutenant Melvin Ronald Greenslade (wife, Mrs D. V. Greenslade, Dunedin), and Acting Flight-lieutenant Ronald David Lamb (father, Mr R. D. Lamb, Dunedin). Both are in the category "missing on air operations."   -Evening Star, 10/7/1944.

Melvin Greenslade was a brewer by profession and airman by inclination.  He joined the Territorial Air Force in 1935 and trained for war in 1940.

In January 1944 he was with 30 Squadron RNZAF operating against Japanese targets in the Solomon Islands.  It seems that his plane was shot down by Japanese anti-aircraft fire while attacking a runway at Vunakanau airfield near Rabaul.

Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
