5903 Private Edward Cutts, 1882-22/11/1903. "suffering pain in his kidneys"

Edward Cutts was 20 years old when he enlisted in the Army in 1902 and was working as a rabbiter in the Palmerston area.

Edward spent 175 days in South Africa and injured himself, straining his back while loading a wagon  with sacks of oats and finding blood in his urine from kidney damage.

In May of 1903 Edward was examined for a second time in Dunedin and his bright's disease was still present but improving, with albumen present in his urine.  He was suffering pain in his kidneys and back.  He was granted paid medical leave from the Army, living in York Place, Dunedin.

Shortly before he died, Edward wrote a letter to (it seems) the Minister of Defence, complaining about the lack of pay being sent to him.  "I still remember your words to us boys in Keendorp, (the name is faded but begins with "K" and ends with "dorp") that you would see us properly treated when we arrived home, well sir hoping you will see into my case I will close..."
