4/697 Sapper Donald Campbell, 1881-4/6/1916. "one of the last to leave the shore"

Sapper Donald Campbell (reported died at sea on June 4) was about thirtyfive years of age. He was born in Christchurch, but received his education at the Upper Waitohi, where his parents lived before shifting to Temuka, where his father, Mr Colin Campbell still resides. He was an enginedriver by trade, and was for many years in partnership with his brother Peter, and the two travelled the country with a traction engine and threshing plant throughout North Otago and South Canterbury. Sapper Campbell left with the Fourth Reinforcements, as a member of the Engineers Corps. He was not at the actual landing on Gallipoli, but was there later, and after a few weeks he was wounded and sent to Malta Hospital. He was in the hospital for three months and a half, and recovering was sent back to Gallipoli, and was present at the evacuation, being one of the last to leave the shore.  -Lyttelton Times, 12/7/1916.

Word received last week (says our Haka-Valley correspondent) of the death at sea of Sapper Donald Campbell, who is well known locally, cast a gloom over the whole district. Much sympathy is felt for the relatives of Sapper Campbell, whose brother, Peter Campbell, is also on active service.  -North Otago Times, 18/6/1916.
