THE LATE ARTHUR PRATTLEY.
The funeral of the late Arthur Prattley, the victim of the recent accident at Smithfield, took place at Temuka on Thursday afternoon, and was largely attended. The late Mr Prattley was a member of the Salvation Army, and also a member of the Salvation Army Band, and the funeral was an Army one. As the cortiege proceeded along High street the band played ‘Home, Sweet Home,” and on arrival at the cemetery, 'It is well with my soul." The service at the graveside was conducted by Captain Hawkes, and short addresses were given by the Captain, Bandmaster Rive, and Adjutant Cresswell. Bandmaster Rive, who had known the deceased for years, gave a touching little address when he spoke of the pleasant and kindly character of the late Bandsman and his faithfulness to the Army and Band. Brother Douglas sung a solo, “Eternity is Near,” and “Rock of Ages,” and ‘‘Abide With Me,” were sung by those assembled. The pall-bearers were Messrs Eli, William, Till, Elijah, and George Prattley, brothers of the deceased. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved mother and wife and relatives of the deceased at the sudden blow that has fallen on them, the more so as the deceased was the third member of the family to meet with a fatal accident.
On Sunday evening a Memorial service was held in the Salvation Army Hall, the building well filled. Touching addresses were given by Captain Hawke, Bandmaster Rive, and Bros. Elijah and William Pratlley (brothers of deceased), in which many touching references to the life and personality of Hthe deceased were made. Captain Hawke took for his text 21st Revelations. The singing Company rendered two beautiful part songs, “God, I shall wipe those tears away” and “Waiting on the other side.” Among the hymns were “Shall we gather at the river,” and “Lead kindly light.” The service was a very touching and impressive one. -Temuka Leader, 8/5/1917.
