9/671 Trooper Charles Birse, 23/4/1888-8/8/1915. "previously reported as wounded"

 PERSONAL.

Private Charles Birse, son of Mrs Birst, of Frankton, who was previously reported as wounded, has since died from the effect of his wounds. Much sympathy is extended to Mrs Birse in the bereavement she has suffered. 

Charles Birse was a miner at Glenorchy when he joined the Otago Mounted Rifles in October, 1914.  He suffered a bullet wound in his ankle and right hip on August 8, 1915 on Gallipoli Peninsula and was evacuated to the Hospital Ship "El-Tahira." He died on August 11 and was buried at sea off the Peninsula.

Mrs Birse, Frankton, desires to tender her heartfelt thanks to numerous friends and acquaintances for message's of sympathy received by her consequent on the death of her son, Private Charles Birse, who lost his life in the performance of his duty to his country.   -Lake Wakatip Mail, 21/9/1915.
