OBITUARY.
Dr. Hugh Waddell, says the Lake County Press, passed away at the Arrow District Hospital on Wednesday last at the early age of 35 years. Deceased was a son of the late Rev Hugh Waddell, Presbyterian Missionary at Tokio, Japan, and nephew of the Rev. Dr. Waddell, Dunedin. He was sent from Japan to Belfast, Ireland, at an early age to be educated. He received his education at the Belfast Royal Academy, subsequently entering Queen’s College, Belfast, where he studied for the medical profession. When he was on the point of completing his course his lungs became affected, and he had to relinquish his studies. He came to the Dominion in the hope that a change of clime would prove beneficial, and arrived in this district some three or four years ago and for a time appeared to improve in health, but that dreaded disease consumption — which he fought gamely against, had apparently too great a hold on him. During the last three years Dr. Waddell acted as medical officer at Pembroke, and he more than once gave evidence of his medical skill. He endeared himself to many in that locality and many in this district by his kindly nature and genial disposition. The news of his demise caused quite a gloom in the Wanaka district where he was universally respected and esteemed. The late Dr Waddell was an athlete of no mean order in his younger days and represented Ireland on the football field. To the bereaved relatives we tender our sincerest sympathy. The funeral took place on Christmas Day in the Arrow Cemetery. -Cromwell Argus, 28/12/1908.
