PRIVATE F. B. GILL.
Mrs Alfred Gill, of South Street, Nelson, received word from the Minister for Defence that her son, Private F. B. Gill, died of wounds on April l4th. Private Gill, who left with the 18th Reinforcements, was on Home Service in England for some twelve months, and recovering his usual health again, he was sent to France a few months ago. He was well known in Nelson and surrounding district, where he, with others who have given their lives for their country, was widely respected. -NZ Times, 25/4/1918.
Frederick Gill was wounded in the stomach in April 13th. He died at the No1 NZ Field Ambulance the next day. His death occurred during a "quiet" period in the line for the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, though losses for the month of April, 1918, were 32 killed, 73 wounded and 1 missing.
