FATAL BUSH FIRE. 

ELDERLY COUPLE PERISH.

A shocking fatality is reported from Rockville, near Collingwood, whereby two elderly people, Mrs. Mary Ann Gin and her brother. Mr. Henry Cisley John Avery (both over sixty years of age) lost their lives. Mrs. Gill kept house for her brother. Yesterday afternoon they went for a walk, and Mr. Avery lit a scrub fire in rough country in two or three places. It burned fiercely and both of them were in danger of being trapped. They attempted to clamber up a steep gully, but were overtaken. Mrs. Gill was burned to death on the spot. Mr. Avery was found with his clothes all burned off and was taken home, where he died at 1.30 this morning. The fatality occurred in a most secluded spot.  -Auckland Star, 24/12/1923.
