Captain John Humphreys, (1822-23/3/1910). "rose step by step"


DEATH.

Humphreys. — On March 23, at his residence, Bridge Street, Nelson: Captain John Humphreys, late of 24th Foot; aged 89 years.  -Marlborough Express, 24/3/1910.


Captain John Humphreys, who died on the 23rd instant at the age of eightyeight, entered the British army as a private in the 94th Regiment and gradually rose step by step to the rank of ensign (says the Nelson “Colonist"). Shortly afterwards at his own request he was transferred to the 85th Regiment as quartermaster, which position he held till his retirement with the rank of captain about thirty-four years ago. He saw very little active service, but was in India at the tail end of the Mutiny. After coming to New Zealand he commenced farming in the Dovedale district. The old veteran did not desire a military funeral, but at his request a trumpeter from the H Battery attended, and at his grave sounded “The Last Post."  -NZ Times, 28/3/1910.

HUMPHREYS. — On October 26th, at Nelson, Frances Jane, relict of the late Captain Humphreys, aged 87 years.  -Nelson Evening Mail, 28/10/1919.
