WATERSIDER'S DEATH
COMPLICATIONS FOLLOW INJURY TO FINGER
A waterside worker, Mr Jack Pike, of 137 Haven road, died yesterday as the result of injuries received on the Nelson wharf on 2nd November. When the accident occurred he had put his hand on a grab to steady it, but it continued to swing and crushed one of his fingers against the hatch of the vessel on which he was working. Only the top joint of the finger was injured. After receiving medical treatment for some days he was admitted to the Nelson Public Hospital, where the finger was amputated on Sunday. Complications set in, however, and death occurred yesterday.
Deceased, who was 28 years of age, leaves a wife and three children.
Flags on the Anchor Company and Harbour Board offices were flown at half-mast to-day as a mark of respect. Nelson Evening Mail, 17/11/1944.
