"The Rev. Charles Creed, the Wesleyan missionary at Waikouaiti, visited the tiny community from time to time. On 29 October, 1846, he conducted the funeral of James Campbell, one of the surveyors' labourers, whose burial was the first in the cemetery reserve in Arthur Street. On this visit he held two services, the second 'to a fairly good congregation'; these were the first Christian services on the Dunedin site." -Dunedin - A Century of Civic Enterprise, K. C. McDonald.
