24/1786 Private Robert Quinn, (1/6/1887-5/5/1918). "second and dearly beloved"

Private Robert Quinn (wounded on the 30th June in left leg) returned to the firing line about 12th September, and was wounded a second time, in the left hand. He is 28 years of age, and was educated at the Marist Brothers' School, Invercargill. He left with the 9th Reinforcements, and is the second son of Mrs Quinn, 110 St. Andrew street, Dunedin.  -Evening Star, 12/10/1916.

Robert Quinn was classified as unfit by a Medical Board in May, 1917, the reason being stated as "deafness due to inflammation." It was regarded as a permanent condition, brought on by active service, but also possibly due to a pre-existing condition. He was repatriated and made an outpatient at Dunedin Hospital.  During his voyage home he had more bad luck - suffering a concussion from being trampled by a horse.

The cause of Robert Quinn's death is not on his record.  It might have been a progressive infection from his ear to his sinus area.
