8/4397 Private William Charlton Nicholson, (6/9/1893-9/4/1916). "in the prime of life"

The death occurred at the Cromwell Hospital, at an early hour yesterday morning, of William Nicholson, a young man well-known in this district. Deceased was a nephew of Mrs Reid, of Queensberry Hotel, and for some time resided with her at Bannockburn. Later he was employed on the dredging fields at Nevis and Cromwell. He answered the Empire's call and joined the Twelfth reinforcements, and after the usual course of training in camp returned on March 22nd to visit his relations on final leave. Twelve days ago he was admitted to Cromwell Hospital suffering from a severe form of appendicitis, but all medical attention was of no avail and death ensued as recorded. Although practically a stranger to the district deceased was a manly young fellow, respected by all. To his bereaved relatives we join in extending our sympathy in the loss of one cut off in the prime of life, and in the laudable ambition of serving his country. The funeral, with honors, takes place in the New Cemetery to-day at 3 p.m.  -Cromwell Argus, 10/4/1916.
