Robert Kilgour worked in a sawmill at Ratanui, near Owaka, before enlisting. He was with the Otago Infantry Regiment in the furious and ultimately unsuccessful attack on Turkish positions at Gallipoli on August 8, 1915.
His death was the verdict of a Court of Enquiry held in Egypt after the end of the campaign. e has no known grave.

In a casualty list this week it is mentioned that Private Robert Jenkins Kilgour is reported missing. Private Kilgour, who is a married man, was at one time employed in the Otago Farmers' Co-operative Association's Owaka branch, and later he was engaged on the sawmills in Catlins district. -Clutha Leader, 5/11/1915.
