55811 Private Lewis Alexander Tavendale, (22/11/1896-24/1/1918). "5.45 pm"


Mrs Tavendale, of Derwent street, received word on Saturday that her second son had died of wounds "somewhere in France." Private L. A. (Dick) Tavendale, who was in his 21st year, before leaving with the 28th Reinforcements, was in the employ of Mr Cunningham, coachbuilder. He was a sergeant in the local Territorials. An elder brother of the deceased soldier, Privates James Tavendale, who left with the 7th Reinforcements, was severely wounded in the foot on the 13th October. -Oamaru Mail, 4/2/1918.





ROLL OF HONOR.

TAVENDALE. — Died of wounds, on January 24th, 1918, Private L. A. Tavendale (Dick), of the 28th Reinforcements, second son of the late James Tavendale, Craigton, Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire, and of Mrs Tavendale, Denvent street, Oamaru aged 21 years.   -Oamaru Mail, 4/2/1918.


Lewis Tavendale died during a relatively quiet time in the front line, when his Regiment (the Otagos) were holding on during winter and with some anticipation of a German assault in the spring.  His Army record notes "penetrating wound chest," "in the field" at No. 2 Canadian Clearing Station, at 5.45 pm.
