HYDRO FATALITY
INQUEST ON McKERROW
[Special to the ‘Star.’]
OAMARU, March 19 An. inquest into the death of Alexander McKerrow, of Oamaru, who received injuries while working at Waitaki Hydro from which he subsequently died was held at Kurow yesterday before the coroner, Mr W. H. Frith. Sergeant McGregor represented the police, and Mr H. J. S. Grater appeared for the relatives.
Evidence was given by Dr Morrow, who said deceased was admitted to hospital on March 2 suffering from shock and internal injuries. In witness’s opinion the injuries were consistent with being crushed. An operation was performed, but the patient did not rally, and succumbed on March 10.
Leslie Clarence Watson said he was working with deceased on the north bank excavation of the dam when the accident happened. Witness had pushed a full truck of metal on to the turntable when McKerrow called out that the truck was running forward. Witness tried to stop it, but failed, and the truck ran forward and overturned near deceased, knocking him down the bank. The injured man was immediately conveyed to hospital. As far as witness knew, deceased was experienced in turning trucks.
Edwin Bain, Alexander Simpson Taylor, and Charles William Short gave corroborative evidence.
A verdict was returned that deceased met his death through being accidentally crushed, his injuries subsequently proving fatal. -Evening Star, 19/3/1936.
