FATAL INJURIES

P.A. OAMARU, Thursday. A single man, Mr. John Johnston, aged 31, an employee of the Oamaru Woollen Mills, had both feet torn off by shafting this morning, and died in hospital later. He was standing on a stack of ammonia sulphate unloading bags when his clothes were caught by the steel shafting.  -Auckland Star, 13/4/1945.


WOOLLEN MILLS FATALITY

An inquest into the death of John Lawrence Clifford Johnston, who died in the Oamaru Public Hospital on Thursday morning immediately following his admission with serious injuries to his legs, received when he was caught in shafting at the Oamaru Woollen Mills, was opened by Mr A. W. Woodward, J.P. (coroner), yesterday morning. Evidence of identification was given by Archie Cooper Taylor. departmental manager of the North Otago Farmers' Co-operative Association, who stated that the deceased was a single man, 31 years of age, and that he was employed at the mills as a dye-house worker. The deceased, said witness, was slightly affected by injuries to his feet, and was not quite as active as a person who had the normal use of the feet. The inquest was adjourned sine die.  -Otago Daily Times, 14/4/1945.
