Charles Maffey enlisted in the Otago Infantry Regiment in 1914 and was hospitalised at Gallipoli the next year for diarrhoea. This developed into "enteritis and debility" the following November. He was returned to New Zealand shortly after and admitted to Dunedin Hospital on arrival.
Private H. Maffey, of Kakanui, after serving nearly two months of active service in the Dardanelles, has returned to the Dominion seriously ill. He is not yet allowed to return home, but has to spend some time in the Dunedin Hospital. The sympathy of the district is extended to his parents, and the hope is generally expressed that he may soon be declared fit to return home to complete his recovery. -Oamaru Mail, 28/12/1915.

G. L. Grenfell, Undertaker, Thames street. -Oamaru Mail, 8/1/1916
A peculiar sadness attaches to the death of Private C. H. Maffey, of Kakanui 10th N.O. Regiment, who succumbed to typhoid yesterday in Dunedin Hospital. Private Maffey was invalided home wounded, by the Tahiti, and was progressing well, but developed typhoid in Dunedin. In the consolation of the presence of his relatives, he was more fortunate than those who have given their lives further afield, but all that could be done was in vain. The body will arrive in Oamaru tonight at 8.30, and will remain in the Drill Hall, until 2 p.m. to-morrow, when a military funeral will leave for the South Oamaru Cemetery. The Regimental Band, together with A and G Companies of the Regiment and all Senior Cadets will parade at the Drill Hall at 1.40 p.m. B Squadron, 5th Mounted Rifles, National Reserve, officers of the unattached list and Reserve, and returned members of the Expeditionary Force are invited to attend. A gun carriage has been obtained from Dunedin, the horses will be obtained locally. The order of the. procession will be: 10th Regimental Band, the firing party, gun carriage bearing the body, chief mourners, and the military parade, cadets, territorials, officers and civilian friends. In the military ranks juniors come first; cadets precede territorials and junior officers the seniors. Three volleys will be fired over the grave. All should participate in the impressive ceremony as an outward mark of honor, typifying the feeling of North Otago towards its bravest lads who are fighting so sternly at the front. The deepest sympathy is widely felt for mourning relatives. -Oamaru Mail, 8/1/1916.
