65952 Gunner Frederick Atrhur Hargreaves, (1916-7/1/1944). "I miss your smiles"

Fred Hargreaves, of the 7th Anti-tank Regiment of the NZ Field Artillery, was killed while in position with his guns, which were placed to repel tanks, during a relatively quiet time on the Italian front which they called a "casa" war.  This was from the Italian word for house and indicated a stationary, though not necessarily peaceful, persion of battle.

Their guns were high-velocity weapons with little ability to elevate the barrels.  They had no defence against German shells from field artillery and mortars, which could be fired from behind cover.  As well as Fred Hargreaves, two other anti-tank gunners died on January 7th while their area was shelled "mercilessly" according to their unit's Official History.
