FOR KING AND COUNTRY.
PORTER — On or about 6th August, killed in action at the Dardanelles. John Alexander Porter, aged 24 years, beloved son of John and; Mary Porter, Tokarahi. "He tried to do his share." -Oamaru Mail, 31/8/1915.
Trooper John Alexander Porter (killed in action at Gallipoli) was a North Otago boy, being a son of Mr John Porter, of Tokarahi, until lately a member of the Waitaki County Council. Trooper Porter was one of the long list of ex-pupils of the Waitaki Boys’ High School who have enrolled for active service. He was on the school roll from 1905 to 1907. He was a fine stamp of a sturdy and strong young man, 24 years of age, and was a corporal in the B (North Otago) Squadron of the 4th Regiment of Mounted Rifles. -Evening Star, 2/9/1915.
