KUMARA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.)

MILITARY FUNERAL.

The mortal remains of Private Henry Johnson, who died suddenly at Featherston Camp last Wednesday, arrived in Kumara on Saturday evening. and were laid to rest in the Kumara Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The funeral, which was a full military one, was one of the largest ever seen in these parts, being quite half a mile long, and bore ample testimony to the esteem in which deceased was held, sympathisers coming fromall parts of the district. The burial services at the house and graveside were conducted by the Rev. Knight, assisted by the Revs. Fraser (Hokitika) and Louden (Reefton). The pallbearers (intimate friends of deceased) were Privates W. Nicholas and S. Stewart and Territorials A. Stewart, G. Harris, C. Martha, and N. Wallace. The coffin was draped with the Union Jack. The cortege was headed by the Grey Citizens’ Band, followed by the Territorials, and moved from deceased’s late residence. Then came the chief mourners, Kumara Cadets, school children, and general public, in the order named. Arriving at the cemetery, the burial service wits conducted and the firing party — members of the Territorials — discharged its volley over the grave. The ‘Last Post" was then sounded by Bugler Garth, of the Grey Cadets, and thus ended the earthly career of one so universallv respected. Sheaves of telegrams and letters of sympathy were received by the sorrowing parents from all parts of the Dominion, whilst beautiful wreaths in almost countless numbers; were piled on top of the hearse.

HIBERNIAN BALL.

The Hibernian Ball, post]toned from last Friday evening, out of respect to the late Private Johnsen, will take place at the Adelphi Theatre on Wednesday evening, September 5th. All arrangements have now been concluded, and the hall beautifully decorated with ferns and evergreens. To those in quest of a good night's, enjoyment I strongly advise to roll up.  -Greymouth Evening Star, 4/9/1917.

Henry Johnsen's Army record contains the report of the Coroner's inquest on his death. A post mortem examination found an enlarged heart and acute nephritis. The verdict was that he died of heart failure after a game of football.
