Thomas Moynihan, 1870-3/6/1913. "the log suddenly rolled"

 FATAL ACCIDENT.

DEATH OF THOMAS MOYNIHAN

A sad accident occurred at Kokatahi yesterday whereby Thomas Moynihan, well-known in this district, met his death under tragic circumstances. Some days ago the deceased and his two sons felled a large black pine tree on the farm, and yesterday morning at about 9.45 o’clock, they went to saw it up into lengths. Thomas and Mathew Moynihan, sons of the deceased, were engaged in sawing off one of the large limbs, and the deceased was working at the butt end of the tree (which was some distance from the ground) boring a hole to take a charge of gelignite to split the log. When about half-way through with the sawing of the limb, the log suddenly rolled over and caught the deceased, the whole log rolling over on to his chest. Assistance was obtained and Moynihan got out, but life was extinct, death apparently having been instantaneous. Mr Moynihan was a very old and highly-esteemed resident of the Coast, having followed mining at Stafford and Kumara for a number of years, subsequently coming to Greymouth, where he was engaged for several years as roads foreman to the Grey Borough Council. About 12 months ago he resigned the latter position to take up land at Kokatahi, where he has since carried on farming operations with a good deal of success. The deceased leaves a wife and large family to mourn the loss of a good husband and father. In their affliction they have extended to them the sympathy of a wide circle of friends, who sincerely regret the untimely death of such a firm end genial companion as “Tommy” Moynihan.

The District Coroner (Mr J. G. L. Hewitt) held an inquest at Kokatahi yesterday, and, having heard the evidence, which revealed the facts as stated above, returned a verdict of accidental death.  -Greymouth Evening Star, 4/6/1913.
