Edward (1842-22/8/1899) and John Edward (1871-15/12/1902) Ryan. "thrown from his horse"

An inquest was held at the Gillespies Beach Hotel on 23rd inst, by J. Ritchie esq., J.P. acting coroner, and a jury of whom Mr S. Fiddian was foreman, to enquire into the death of the late Edward Ryan, of Gillespies Beach. The witnesses examined were deceased's son and Messrs Melvin and Nicholson, ferrymen at Karangaroa. After a careful and exhaustive enquiry a verdict was returned that deceased met his death by accident, by being thrown from his horse at Isaac's Beach on the 21st of August. It appears that for some time back deceased was subject to fainting fits and it is quite probable that in one of these fits he got thrown, which was the cause of his death.   -West Coast Times, 29/8/1899.

We deeply regret to record the death of Mr John E Ryan, son of the late Mr E Ryan, which occurred at his home Gillespies, South Westland, on Saturday. The deceased was a member of one of the oldest and most respected families in the far South, where he was personally very greatly esteemed. Death was caused by that fell disease consumption which in a comparatively short period has carried off the father and several members of the family. The bereaved mother and her family all have the heartfelt sympathy of very many friends throughout the West Coast in their great affliction.  -West Coast Tmes, 16/12/1902.
