Charles Glass, 1874-23/6/1925. "Ring Charlie Glass"

HARI HARI NOTES

The tragic suddenness of the death of Mr. Charles Glass, senr., of Mount Hercules, which took place at the Westland Hospital on Tuesday night last, came as a shock to everybody in the community. “Charlie” was about as usual on Monday morning. About noon the same day he complained of not feeling well, and in the afternoon his wife had the patient removed to the Westland Hospital, but the deceased never improved and passed away on the following night. The funeral took place yesterday, leaving his late residence, Mount Hercules, for the Hari Hari cemetery. The deceased leaves behind him a widow, five sons (named Charles, James, William, David, Jack) and two daughters (Mary at home) and Mrs A. Lehn of Matainui). The late Charles Glass spent the greater part of his life in the Hari Hari district, being employed as roadman on behalf of the Public Works Department, in the district for the past twenty years, until he resigned from the Department about four years ago, mostly to pay attention to his farm at Mount Hercules. In the days before the Little Wanganui bridge was erected, visitor's travelling south, upon finding the river doubtful to cross, had all the one password: "Ring Charlie Glass - he'll let you know, or pilot you over!’’ Many a car he helped out of difficulty. The district lost a good citizen by his passing.  -Grey River Argus, 29/6/1925.
