John Cooper, 1757-24/2/1875. "remembered the landing of Captain Cook"

There died at the Benevolent Institution last week a very old man named John Cooper. He was a native of Tahiti, and was admitted to the institution two years ago, when he came up from Stewart's Island. His age, according to his own account, was 117 years. He frequently stated that he remembered the landing of Captain Cook at Tahiti. Asthma was the cause of his death. He was walking about till the day he died, and was smoking his pipe to the last moment.  -Otago Daily Times, 4/3/1875.

Our readers will doubtless remember that we recently chronicled the death of John Cooper, a native of Tahiti, who died in the Otago Benevolent Institution, and had alleged that he remembered the arrival of Captain Cook, and was 118 years of age. The sexton of the Southern Cemetery (Mr Simpson), with others, collected sufficient money to purchase an allotment for him in the Presbyterian section of the Cemetery, and also erected a neat freestone cross at the centenarian's grave, bearing the simple inscription of his name, age, and date of demise.  -Otago Daily Times, 23/3/1875.
