Our Hokitika correspondent writes: The young lad, Michael Jackson, who has been a patient at the Westland Hospital, passed away about midnight on Saturday. The deceased was 18 years of age, and had been suffering from an injury to his foot, which evidently turned to blood poisoning. After doing everything possible to save the limb, it was at last found necessary to amputate it. The lad was a great favourite with all visitors to the institution. His bright smiling face and cheerful resignation, although sobering severely, was a marked trait in his character. He had been an inmate of the hospital for about 16 months. The deceased was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs David Jackson, of Aickens, Christchurch Road. The funeral, which was a private one, took place yesterday morning at the Hokitika Cemetery. -Greymouth Evening Star, 31/7/1917.
