Caroline Hende, 1850-7/11/1917. "kindness itself to all she met"

News wa s received early this morning of the death of Mrs C. R. Hende, wife of Mr Peter Hende, the well known southern settler of Hende's Ferry, Inter-Wanganui district. Mr and Mrs Hende have been very old residents of iSouth Westland. Before the construction of the inland road, the couple resided at the mouth of the Big Wanganui river, where Mr Hende was ferryman, and Mrs Hende in charge of the accommodation house. Later, when the main thoroughfare was opened, they removed inland, Mr Hende again taking charge of the ferry. The crossing came to be known after Mr Hende, as “Hende’s Ferry,’’ and there the couple lived and reared a family now grown up. The family included: Private Peter B. Hende (who died lately on active service as a result of wounds in a Flanders battle). There are two daughters married, one being Mrs G. Scott-Robertson, of Hari Hari, and the other Mrs Lucas, of Wataroa. There are three other sons, James, Carl and Johann at Inter-Wanganui. Not very long ago, Mr and Mrs Hende resided in Bealey street for a short time, coming to Hokitika on account of Mr Hende’s health. They returned home a few weeks ago, and yesterday Mrs Hende took suddenly ill, and Dr. Teichelmann was telephoned for. The doctor motored south with all haste, but was too late, death having ensued. The funeral will be held to-morrow forenoon m, 11 o’clock, and remains will be interred at the Inter-Wanganui cemetery. Mrs Hende was very highly esteemed. She was a homely old lady, and kindness itself to all she met. Every sympathy will be expressed with the family in their bereavement.  -Hokitika Guardian, 8/11/1917.
