Laurence Sullivan, 1833-25/10/1917. "a short cut across the railway line"

SHOCKING ACCIDENT AT HOKITIKA.

MR. LAURENCE SULLIVAN KILLED.

(Per Press Association.) HOKITIKA, October 25

A shocking fatally occurred at the railway station shortly after the arrival of the evening train during shunting operations. Laurence Sullivan, a retired settler, from South Westland, over seventy years of age, was found run over, and his body terribly mutilated. He was seen on the railway platform shortly before, and it is inferred that he was taking a short cut across the railway line to his residence near by. He leaves a widow, and grown up family. He was a well-known grazier of Cooks Rover. He had one son, now serving in the forces.  -Grey River Argus, 26/10/1917.

RUN OVER BY A TRAIN.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT HOKITIKA

(Our Own Correspondent.)

A fatal accident occurred shortly after 7 o'clock last evening at the Hokitika railway station. It appears an old man named Lawrence Sullivan had gone to the station to see the train in, and on his way returning to his home nearby, in Fitzherbert St., he was knocked down during shunting operations. The accident occurred near the Weld Street crossing, and the old man was badly mangled, having both his legs cut off near the knees and his head smashed. The deceased was about 80 years of age and one of the old pioneers of South Westland, where he spent the best years of his life at his homestead at Weheka, During the last couple of years Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan have lived in Hokitika. The relatives are well known residents of Westland, two daughters, Mrs. Henry Williams and Mrs. M. McCavin, of Park Street, are residing in Hokitika at present, and the sons, one of whom is on active service, are stock raisers in South Westland. Of late the old gentleman had been in failing health, but his sudden death will come as a shock to his relatives and friends. The sympathy of a large number of friends will be extended to the relatives in the sudden bereavement.  -Greymouth Evening Star, 26/10/1917.
