29752 Private Sydney George Duke, (6/10/1891-3/6/1917). "died of wounds"

ROLL OF HONOR.

Mr William Duke, a well-known Dunedin butcher, has received word that his youngest son, Sydney George, has died of wounds. He was wounded in the lungs with shrapnel. An operation was performed, but he did not rally. The deceased before enlisting was employed by Dalgety and Co., Ltd., and was about 23 years of age. He was a fine musician and held the A.T.C.L. degree. Mr Duke has another son at the front.  -Poverty Bay Herald, 12/6/1917.

A brief look at Sydney Duke's Army record shows that he was wounded on May 18.  A brief look at the history of his Regiment, the Otago Infantry, shows that nothing notable occurred on the day he was fatally wounded.

Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
