8/641 Private James George Anderson, (29/10/1893-28/4/1915). "popular with his fellow oarsmen"

DEATHS.

FOR THE EMPIRE'S CAUSE. 

ANDERSON. — On April 28, killed in action at the Dardanelles, Private James George Anderson, eldest son of the late Robert and Mary Anderson, 468 Leith street (late fruiterer, Dundas street), and grandson of the late Robert Anderson, of the old flour mills, Woodhaugh; in his 22nd year. 

He gave his life, for his King and Country.   -Otago Daily Times, 21/6/1915.




Private James George Anderson (Otago Battalion) is the son of Mr Robert H. Anderson (till recently a well-known fruiterer in Dundas street) and a grandson of the late Robert Anderson, of the old flour mills, Woodhaugh. He received his education at the Albany Street School, where he secured his proficiency certificate. After leaving school he served at the local telegraph office for about four years. When he enlisted as a signaller in the main body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces he was engaged as a salesman in W. Harris and Son's boot stores, and was a Territorial in the 4th Otago Regiment. He was a member of the North End Boating Club and was very popular with his fellow oarsmen.   -Otago Daily Times, 22/6/1915.
