It was with deep regret that residents of Millerton learned of the death of Mrs Ivy Elsie Milligan, while attending the children’s picnic at Mokihinui. She had just run in the married women’s race when she collapsed. Mr W. Smith and Mr Blyth used artificial respiration methods until the arrival of Dr. J. Simpson, who pronounced life extinct.
The funeral of the late Mrs Milligan took place on Tuesday, moving from the residence of Mr Alfred Dowse, Waimangaroa, to the local cemetery. There was a large number of mourners, Millerton being well represented, and the many floral tributes bore testimony of the esteem in which the deceased was held. Rev. Sanderson conducted the services a the residence and graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs C. Orman, F. Plummer, F. Riddell and T. Birchfield.
The recent heavy rain brought quite a number of slips down on the Millerton track. -Grey River Argus, 4/3/1940.
Inquests: The Coroner, Mr. G. E. J. Taylor, conducted an inquest into the death of Mrs. Ivy Elsie Milligan, who collapsed following participation in a running event at a school picnic held at Mokihinui. Milligan, husband of deceased, returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, that death was due to myocarditis. -Grey River Argus, 5/3/1940.
